Stop comparing yourself online

Online comparisons make you needlessly feel inadequate.

Scrolling through social media can feel enjoyable, until a pang of inadequacy hits. Other people’s lives seem happier, more exciting, and full of achievements. People you follow lounge on sun-drenched beaches, cocktails in hand. People your age celebrate exam results, sports victories, or creative accomplishments with perfectly staged photos. Meanwhile, you’re tied to your screen, running errands, or catching up on laundry, while it’s raining outside, feeling the heavy weight of not measuring up.

And it doesn’t stop there. For most of human history, we only measured ourselves against a handful of people we actually knew. Now, with a few taps, we’re confronted with beautiful models, successful entrepreneurs, influencers who seem to have it all, talented musicians, and world-class athletes. Measuring yourself against that unrealistic standard will only leave you feeling inadequate.

Nearly everyone falls into the trap of comparing themselves online. The problem is that social media usually only shows the highlights and successes. We rarely see the long hours, the failed attempts, the awkward or boring moments, or the insecurity and doubt behind those pictures. Every post is curated to show success, fun, or beauty, while the messy, ordinary, and difficult parts of life stay hidden. Our minds tend to assume that what we see is all there is, making other people’s lives seem more perfect than they are. Comparing your full, complicated life to someone else’s edited snapshots is like judging a movie by its trailer. It is unfair, unrealistic, and guaranteed to make you feel worse. Understanding that what you see online is only a fraction of reality can free you from constant comparison.

Everyone’s life is full of ups and downs, from health hiccups and relationship challenges to moments of self-doubt and small everyday failures. Focus on your own path instead of someone else’s highlights to stop feeling inadequate. Use that focus to live in alignment with your values, pursue your purpose, achieve your goals, and become the person you want to be. Whether that’s finishing a project, reconnecting with friends, learning something new, completing a workout, or volunteering. Along the way, take time to savor your experiences and be grateful for what you havex` and what’s going well. Your life is a journey. Appreciate it while it lasts.
