Get clear on your goal

Refine your goal to make it achievable and trackable.

Now that youโ€™ve identified the right goal for your motivation, refine it. This step ensures your goal is SMART: specific, measurable, achievable, relevant and time-bound. A well-defined goal gives you direction, making it easier to focus on what matters and move forward with purpose.

Take the goal youโ€™ve defined: I want to [what you want to achieve].

Make it as SMART as possible. Goals that are clear, realistic, and easy to track help you stay focused and actually achieve results.

๐Ÿ‘‰ Specific: Make your goal clear and detailed to avoid confusion. Include details like how much, how often, how far, when, where, or whoโ€™s involved. For example, instead of โ€œI want to get fit,โ€ use โ€œI want to run 3 miles without stopping.โ€ For healthier eating, use โ€œIโ€™ll cook dinner at home five nights a week.โ€ And to spend more time with friends, use โ€œIโ€™ll plan a weekly coffee with one friend.โ€

๐Ÿ‘‰ Measurable: Set a goal you can track. It usually includes a number, amount, or frequency. For example, โ€œI want to save $500 in two monthsโ€ or โ€œIโ€™ll run 3 miles three times a week.โ€ Tracking progress shows how far youโ€™ve come and lets you celebrate small wins to stay motivated.

๐Ÿ‘‰ Achievable: Set a goal thatโ€™s possible with your current resources, abilities, and confidence. For example, becoming a professional athlete in a month isnโ€™t achievable, but running a 5K in two months might be realistic. Focus on what you can realistically do, as overly ambitious goals can lead to frustration and lower confidence.

๐Ÿ‘‰ Relevant: A relevant goal matters to you and aligns with your life purpose and values. It should connect to why you want to achieve it, making your effort feel meaningful. Since youโ€™ve already chosen a goal that fits your motivation, this step is essentially taken care of.

๐Ÿ‘‰ Time-bound: Set a deadline to create urgency and focus. For example, โ€œI want to complete my certification by December.โ€ For a personal goal, you could say, โ€œI want to lose 4 pounds in the next month.โ€ A clear timeline helps you track progress and stay motivated along the way.

Refining your goal is like sculpting a block of marble: a rough shape gradually becomes defined as you chip away.

You can write your refined goal like this:

I want to [what you want to achieve] [how much/frequency] by [time period].

Here are a few examples to guide you:

๐Ÿ‘‰ I want to read two books by the end of next month.

๐Ÿ‘‰ I want to meditate for 10 minutes every morning for the next four weeks.

๐Ÿ‘‰ I want to walk 10,000 steps five days a week for the next month.

๐ŸŽ‰๐Ÿ‘๐ŸŽˆ

With a clear, achievable goal in place, youโ€™re ready to make a plan to achieve it and turn it into results.
